Examples of AI

The articles define AI as an application consisting of

  1. A large collection of data examples
  2. An algorithm for learning a model from that training set.
  3. An interface with the world.

List 3-5 examples of AI according to this definition (not including one’s mentioned in the articles). Bonus points for unexpected examples.

Why statistics?

The so called “first wave” of AI did not use much statistics/data (e.g. read about expert systems or watch this video by DARPA on AI). While it wouldn’t be fair to call modern AI a subset of statistics, many modern AI algorithms are fundamentally statistical in nature/are based on data (academics love saying other fields are a subset of their own…)

Speculate about why data/statistical algorithms are now major players in AI?
